Consumer Unit Upgrades
An old fuse box does one job: it breaks the circuit when the wiring is badly overloaded. A modern consumer unit does a great deal more, with RCD protection that cuts the supply fast enough to matter if someone touches a live conductor, and individual protection for every circuit so a fault in one room does not black out the house.
If your board has rewireable fuses, a plastic enclosure, or no RCD at all, it predates requirements that exist for good reason. It is also the single item that most often turns up on an EICR as needing attention.
We test every circuit before the swap so any hidden faults are found and priced honestly up front, rather than discovered once the new board is on the wall and refusing to hold.
What's included
Circuits tested first
Every circuit is inspected and tested before the board is changed. A new consumer unit will find faults the old one tolerated, so it is far better to know beforehand.
RCD protection throughout
Modern RCBO protection means a fault on one circuit trips that circuit only, instead of taking out the whole house or half the sockets.
Surge protection
Surge protection fitted as standard where the board allows it, which matters more every year as more of the house becomes expensive electronics.
Labelled and tested
You get a properly labelled board so you know what every switch does, and the full test results for the work.
Consumer units questions, answered
How much does a consumer unit upgrade cost?
Across Leeds a consumer unit upgrade is typically £400 to £750, depending on the number of circuits and what the testing finds. We price each one after seeing it, and you get one fixed price in writing before work starts.
How long does it take?
Most consumer unit changes are a single day, including the testing before and after. Power is off for part of that day and we will tell you roughly when.
Do I need one if nothing is going wrong?
Not automatically. But if your board has rewireable fuses or no RCD, it is not giving you the protection a current one would. We will test and tell you straight whether it genuinely needs changing.
Why did my new board start tripping?
A modern board detects faults an old one ignored, so it can reveal existing problems in the wiring. That is exactly why we test every circuit before quoting, so anything like that is found and priced up front.
