Otley is a proper Wharfedale market town. There have been markets here since at least 1227. An old stone bridge crosses the Wharfe. The Chevin stands over the whole town. It is also a town of old buildings, which makes the electrical work here more interesting than most.

Stone town, old yards and 1900s terraces
Otley's old centre is a conservation area of 101 hectares, with more than 200 listed buildings. Traditional Otley is built of coarse Chevin gritstone, with stone or slate roofs. Old yards and ginnels run off the streets, such as Bay Horse Yard and New Inn Yard.
Mills and printing works made the town busy. By 1900 more than 2,000 people here built printing machines. Rows of stone terraces went up for workers from 1847 on. Terraces from around 1900 still line Bridge Avenue, Farnley Lane, Newall Mount and Manor Street.
Council homes came next. A scheme began at Newall in 1920. By 1955 Otley had more than 1,000 council houses. Lots more homes went up from the 1960s to the 1980s. Homes from those years often need a new fuse box. Some need a rewire.
