How Much Does a Consumer Unit Upgrade Cost in Leeds?

Across Leeds a consumer unit upgrade is typically £400 to £750. A small flat with six circuits sits at the bottom. A four-bed in Wetherby or Roundhay with a garage supply, an electric shower, a hob and outdoor circuits sits at the top. The price follows the number of circuits, because each one needs its own protective device and each one has to be tested before it goes on the new board. The board itself is a smaller part of the cost than most people expect.

For that you get a metal consumer unit with surge protection as standard and RCD protection on every circuit, a full test of the existing wiring before the changeover, every circuit labelled and the paperwork the same day. If the testing finds a fault on a circuit we tell you before the new board goes on and quote the fix separately, so there is never a surprise on the bill. You get one fixed price before we start and it does not move.

Circuits drive the price

Six circuits and sixteen circuits are different jobs. We count yours before quoting rather than guessing.

Testing included

Every circuit is tested before the swap. Faults found are quoted separately and only fixed if you want them fixed.

The £150 board

Adverts for a board change at that price usually mean a plastic unit, no testing and no paperwork. Ask what is included.

Your questions, answered

Why do quotes for the same job vary so much across Leeds?

Some include testing, surge protection and a metal board. Some do not. Some are a lead price that rises once the electrician sees the cupboard. Ours is fixed after we have seen it.

Does a new board mean I need a rewire?

Rarely. Most houses have sound wiring and an old board. The testing tells us either way and we say so honestly before any work starts.

Does the upgrade affect my home insurance?

It can only help. Some insurers ask about the age of the electrics and a modern board with the paperwork to show for it answers that question.
